Mission : “Maximizing road and driving security in Istanbul in order to make city traffic safer and more reachable for both drivers, passengers and pedestrians. Building and operating an infrastructure that enables effective traffic observation and management regarding time and cost criterias, as well as providing accurate traffic data, which will enable drivers, passengers and pedestrians to use city traffic efficiently and safely.”
Vision : “Make İstanbul, a contemporary, qualified, safety, accessible metropolis from transportation aspects, which is one of the most outstanding cities of the world with its cosmopolitan and cultural structure, historical affluence, population density and architectural properties.”

Missions and authorities of Directorate of Traffic that were defined in 1 April 1988 at circular number 3 are described as following:
In accompliance with İstanbul Metropolitan Municipality’s main strategies and politics, acting and doing it’s pre-defined tasks in coordination with related associations and institutions in order to implement all necessary works about present traffic signalization systems to enable the best traffic flow.
Planning, organizing directing, coordinating, and detecting the traffic as a whole to provide the continual best traffic flow at intersections of central arteries.
Making, applying, commissioning projects, marking horizontal and vertical traffic signs in order to provide traffic safety and security on central arteries, highways and public roads in accompliance with principles of constitution of Directorate, considering the demands of institutions' and citizens'.
Presenting the online traffic images of intersections and central arteries to local radios and TV channels in a fast and reliable manner; surveying traffic jams and accidents and similar situations at important intersections and central arteries; transferring required information to related units and making coordination to make traffic more secure and faster.
Executing the other similar duties that are given by Mayority and Transportation Department.
